Genital Herpes More Sexually Transmitted Disease? | Revista ...

There are at least twenty different types of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) found so far and it is reported that chlamydia is the most common. Genital herpes comes 10th on the list of common sexually transmitted diseases, HIV preceded and followed by hepatitis.

Despite the lower row, this viral sexually transmitted disease is one of the most feared genital infections because no complete cure. Caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), herpes infection can be of two main types ? cold sores and genital herpes. Cold sores are usually caused by HSV-1, while genital herpes is transmitted primarily by HSV-2.

Herpes has always drawn a lot of medical attention, perhaps more than chlamydia or some other STD, interesting because of the nature of the virus that causes it. The herpes simplex virus can be transmitted from person to person through sex or any kind of physical contact. see the treatment

The infection is highly contagious and even safe sex does not fully guarantee prevention. Basically there are two major challenges when it comes to dealing with genital herpes. First, you may not realize that you carry the virus in their body. Second, can unknowingly transmit the virus to their partner at the time of sexual intimacy.

The second concern is very real and can be difficult to avoid. You do not have to suffer from an active herpes outbreak spread the virus. Even when they have no visible symptoms of herpes, it is possible that the latent virus in cell bodies transmit to your partner.

The good news is that strong antiviral drug Valtrex and Famvir can give relief to the immediate complications and long term of genital herpes. Valtrex is the only drug proven to reduce the risk of herpes transmission among sexually active partners. Famvir, moreover, can help combat recurrent herpes outbreaks quickly and without much pain.

The basic objective of genital herpes antiviral treatment is to help patients live with the virus, as there is no way to completely cure herpes. Both Valtrex and Famvir can do and do well enough to earn the trust of doctors around the world are many.

If your immune system is healthy and if you have kidney problems, the dose once daily Valtrex can ensure they do not suffer from recurrent herpes outbreaks.

Likewise having only 4 tablets of Famvir (first 2-6 hours of an outbreak and the next two after 12 hours) may shorten the duration of symptoms of genital herpes and give quick relief. But to know what medicine to take, you have to talk to a doctor. Both drugs are available only by prescription.

More than 30,000 people had their attacks of herpes for the first time in 2009, according to statistics by the various genitourinary medicine clinics in the UK.

The speed at which genital herpes is spreading in the country is quite alarming and tighten the graph below, everyone should be aware of its dangers and risk factors and act on expert advice.

(AP) ? Bullets were flying from a black Range Rover at a gray Maserati as the vehicles raced toward a red light on the Las Vegas Strip.

Beneath the neon lights, police say, the Maserati ran a red light at one of the Strip's busiest intersections and smashed into a taxi that exploded into flames early Thursday, killing the two people inside.

Three more cars and a utility truck also collided at the crossroads home to Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's, injuring at least six more people as the Range Rover sped off in the pre-dawn darkness.

The Maserati driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The dramatic scene that more than one tourist compared to something out of a violent action movie set off a frantic search for the occupants of the Range Rover that continued into the night, and marked the latest violent episode on the Strip since the beginning of the year.

Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed Saturday in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie told reporters several hours after Thursday's attack that it was sparked by an argument in the valet area of the nearby Aria hotel-casino, and that the violence at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road did not reflect the values of Las Vegas residents or visitors.

"What happened will not be tolerated," Gillespie said. He promised the shooters would be "found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

On the Strip ? closed and snarling traffic throughout the day until reopening late Thursday night ? the fiery rampage shocked tourists.

"We get stabbings, and gang violence," said Mark Thompson, who was visiting from Manchester, England, with his wife, "but this is like something out of a movie. Like 'Die Hard' or something."

Police said they were contacting authorities in three neighboring states about the Range Rover Sport with dark tinted windows and distinctive black custom rims and plates that fled the scene about 4:20 a.m. It had a car dealer's advertisement in place of a license plate.

In Southern California, the California Highway Patrol alerted officers in at least three counties to be on the lookout for the SUV.

Las Vegas police Sgt. John Sheahan said the Range Rover was last seen near the Venetian resort as it headed north from the shooting scene on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Witnesses also told police the SUV and Maserati had come from the nearby CityCenter area, the home of Aria, just south of the site of the attack.

"We have numerous witnesses to this," Sheahan said. "But what is the genesis of this? We don't know yet."

Predawn jogger Eric Lackey was on his way back to the New York-New York hotel when he snapped a cellphone photo of the blazing scene moments after the crash. Black smoke billowed from the flaming taxi, amid popping sounds from the fire.

Lackey, of Forest Hill, Md., said a security officer in a yellow shirt performed CPR on a person on the sidewalk while police officers canvassed a small crowd of perhaps 15 onlookers gathering at the scene.

"Police were asking if anyone was still in the vehicles and if they heard gunfire," Lackey told The Associated Press. "That's when I realized it wasn't just a regular accident."

Sheahan said police have video from traffic cameras at the intersection and were checking hotel surveillance systems. The video will not be made public, he said.

Police did not release the names of the people who were killed, citing the ongoing investigation.

The crumpled, gray Maserati, which had no license plate, came to rest several feet away from the incinerated taxi.

"The people I feel sorry for are the people in the taxi," said Elvina Joyce, a tourist from Regina, Saskatchewan. "Seconds made all the difference in the world for them. Wrong place, wrong time."

The area near the scene has been the site of high-profile violence in the past.

Rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996 about a block away under similar circumstances, as assailants opened fire on his luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road. The killing has never been solved.

Ecuador's Correa breezes to 2nd re-election

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) ? President Rafael Correa, a dynamic leftist who has championed Ecuador's lower classes with generous social spending but faced wide rebuke as intolerant of dissent, coasted to a second re-election on Sunday.

Correa won 56.7 percent of the vote against 24 percent for his closest challenger, former Banco de Guayaquil chief Guillermo Lasso, with 36 percent of the vote counted.

So confident was Correa of victory that he appeared on state TV less than an hour after polls closed, hugging jubilant supporters at the Carondelet presidential palace.

He then addressed a cheering crowd from its balcony.

"This victory is yours. It belongs to our families, our wives, our friends and neighbors, the entire nation," Correa said. "We are only here to serve you. Nothing for us. Everything for you, a people who have become dignified in being free."

Lasso conceded as first official results were released, congratulating Correa for "a victory deserving respect." Former President Lucio Gutierrez won 5.9 percent. The rest of the vote was divided among five other candidates.

Correa told reporters his goal is to now further reduce poverty, which the United Nations says dropped from 37.1 percent to 32.4 percent since he first took office in 2007, as he deepens what he terms his "citizens' revolution."

Correa, 48, has brought uncharacteristic political stability and modest economic growth to this oil-exporting nation of 14.6 million people that cycled through seven presidents in the decade before him.

He has raised living standards for the poor and widened the welfare state with region-leading social spending, though human rights groups say he bullies anyone who gets in his way and civil liberties have suffered.

Correa's result Sunday topped his April 2009 re-election, when he won 51.7 percent of the vote. That election was mandated by a constitutional rewrite approved in a referendum. Correa is legally barred from another 4-year term ? unless he seeks to amend the constitution.

A champion of big government in the mold of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez but more respectful of private property, Correa has made public education and health care more accessible, built or improved 7,820 kilometers (4,870 miles) of highways and, the government says, created 95,400 jobs in the past four years.

Lasso had promised a government friendlier to foreign investment, lower taxes on job-creating companies and a rolling back of elements of what Correa calls his "21st century socialism," such as a 5 percent tax on capital removed from Ecuador.

Among voters casting their ballot for Correa in Quito was Jomaira Espinosa, 18.

"Before (Correa), my family didn't have enough to eat" and her father couldn't find work, she said. Now her father has a job as a public servant and she expects to be able to study for free at a university thanks to Correa's programs.

But Correa has also arbitrarily wielded a near-monopoly on state power, critics say, using criminal libel law against opposition news media and seizing the country's airwaves several times a week to spread his political gospel and attack opponents.

German Calapucha, a 29-year-old accountant, said he voted against Correa because he's tired of the president's imperiousness.

"He thinks that because he wins elections he has the right to mistreat people," Calapucha said. "I want a country where people respect each other."

Correa has eroded the influence of opposition parties, the Roman Catholic Church and the news media and used criminal libel law to try to silence opposition journalists. Critics lament his staking of courts with friendly judges and the government's prosecution of indigenous leaders for organizing protests against Correa's opening up of Ecuador to large-scale mining without their consent.

"He is far too insolent and I want there to be freedom of expression," said Laura Realpe, a 59-year-old housewife.

One blessing for Correa has been oil prices that have been hovering around $100 a barrel.

Petroleum accounts for more than half of Ecuador's export earnings and have allowed it to lead the region in 2011 in public spending as a portion of gross domestic product at 11.1 percent, according to the United Nations. Bolivia was second with 10.8 percent.

Voters such as Fabian Garzon, a 48-year-old messenger and cleaner, credit Correa with improving their lives.

Garzon has what he's always dreamed of: his own apartment, which he is buying with a $24,000 government-issued mortgage. His monthly salary, meanwhile, has more than doubled over the past four years, from $200 to $450, and payments for his social security, vacation and other government-mandated contributions are being made regularly.

"I worked 25 years without having my own house and at this age, thank God, I'm able to own my own home," Garzon said.

In all, 1.9 million people receive $50 a month in aid from the state. Critics complain that the popular handouts to single mothers, needy families and the elderly poor, along with other subsidies, have bloated the government.

The number of people working for the government has burgeoned from 16,000 to 90,000 during Correa's current term, Ecuador's nongovernmental Observatory of Fiscal Policy said in a December report.

Correa also has been unable to stop a growing sensation of vulnerability in a country where robberies and burglaries grew 30 percent in 2012 compared with the previous year.

The graduate of the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign gained an early reputation as a maverick, defying international financiers by defaulting on $3.9 billion in foreign debt obligations and rewriting contracts with oil multinationals to secure a higher share of oil revenues for Ecuador.

He has also kept the United States at arm's length while upsetting Britain and Sweden in August by granting asylum at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the online spiller of leaked U.S. government secrets who is wanted for questioning in Sweden for alleged sexual assault.

Correa has cozied up to U.S. rivals Iran and China. The latter is the biggest buyer of Ecuador's oil and holds $3.4 billion in Ecuadorean debt, Finance Minister Patricio Rivera says.

Despite low Interest Rates, Many Remain too ... - Idaho Real Estate

house_acreage2_500_01
There are still plenty of people out there who remain hesitant from the mortgage crisis, and as a result are missing out on some serious opportunities to refinance with historically low interest rates.?

Right now American homeowners across the nation are enamored with low interest rates, but still, not everyone is taking advantage.

For example, we'll look at the case of, we'll call him John Doe, who was offered a deal by his mortgage banker who was absolutely sure he wouldn't refuse. John Doe was paying a rate of 6.16 percent on his $435,000 mortgage with 25 years left to go when he was offered the chance to refinance at 4.125 percent-still holding onto the 25 year payoff time. The deal would have lowered his monthly mortgage payment to $3,383, a savings of $630 a month. The cost to refinance would have been recouped within four months of signing and didn't involve much paperwork or an appraisal valuation. The streamlined process seemed like a no-brainer. But for John Doe, it was a thanks, but no thanks.

In a case like this, most homeowners would jump at the opportunity.

For mortgage brokers, it's usually fairly easy to give away money, and in fact, refinance activity has really taken off thanks to historically low interest rates these past couple years. One group of unfortunate homeowners are the exception to this rule, however, those with homes whose value plummeted and left them without the required equity to qualify for refinancing.

HARP

interior_kitchen1_500

But with the introduction of the Home Affordable Refinance Program, these homeowners-who are still current on their payments-are now able to reap the benefits of the same low rates so many others are enjoying.?The first government assistance programs to surface after the housing bubble burst were designed only to help those who stopped paying their mortgage entirely. HARP provides those who remain current on their payments an opportunity to restructure their loan, giving more homeowners the ability to stay ahead.

Since the government program's inception back in 2009, HARP has been refined to allow homeowners to refinance regardless of how underwater they are. These revisions aside, some still found quite a few obstacles to jump over, but for 2013 the situation is improving, though it remains a challenge to get the word out to those who may qualify. And for others like John Doe, the convincing has proved difficult, despite the government's efforts.

Retail lenders across the country are making every effort to get the word out about HARP to homeowners who qualify. Dan Gilbert, the founder and CEO of Quicken, has taken an aggressive approach to spread the word. "We get their home number, the business number, their e-mail, we express-mail packages to their house so it looks serious. We leave messages; we tell them, 'Go look up HARP on Google and you'll see it's real.' We don't quit."

The Statistics Of Those Who Qualify

Yet nearly half of qualified homeowners don't respond.

Gilbert goes on to say, "if you would have told me all the facts about how this works before, I would have predicted we'd get 80 percent to 85 percent."

In fact, Quicken reports that only about 25 percent of those who qualify for HARP actually take advantage. Perhaps homeowners just don't understand what really a great program HARP is, a program that reaches out to those who have maintained their payments and in the meantime help the homeowners out there who need it the most.

In an attempt to spread the good news, we'll share a few advantages of the HARP Refinance. Remember, HARP was created to refinance creditworthy homeowners with too little equity to refinance the conventional way. You do not have to demonstrate imminent default or financial hardship to qualify for HARP. Here's what you need:

A 1 to 4 bedroom home.
Your home loan must be owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.
A demonstration of at least 12 months of on time payments.
Owe no more than 105 percent of your property value.

First, you can check online to see if Fannie or Freddie holds your loan, then you can contact your loan servicer and ask about a HARP refinance mortgage.

landscaping_500In addition to expanded loan-to-value ratios, HARP carries other benefits. You do not have to have a particular credit score to qualify, and unlike conventional refinances, having your home on the market isn't necessarily a deal breaker. And namely, a reduction in property value doesn't hurt you. In fact, if you don't have mortgage insurance on your current home loan, you won't be required to add it with less than 20 percent equity; you don't even have to carry mortgage insurance with negative home equity. On that same note, if you do have mortgage insurance, you won't be required to add additional coverage even if your equity has decreased. Normally, you would.

It would be safe to bet on fewer surcharges. Loan-level pricing adjustments top out at 2 points under HARP, so if you carry factors that might normally drive up the cost of your loan, a low credit score for example, you won't pay through the roof to refinance your mortgage. Without this 2 point cap, you could end up with 5 extra points added to your loan fees.

So, if you're a responsible homeowner looking to reduce your interest rate and decrease your payments, or if you're looking for a modification of your risky loan structure to a more stable one-HARP may be your answer. Now known as "HARP 2" and also "Making Home Affordable," you'll find all the aforementioned benefits as well as lower closing costs, lenient underwriting and oftentimes no property assessments.

For homeowners out there who have the courage to take the chance, you may find that this helping hand is the key you need to enjoy the same low interest rates as everyone else.

Viral: Photoshopped Distinguished Warfare Medal

There has been quite a bit of talk this week following the Wednesday announcement of the Distinguished Warfare Medal by outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Many critics are upset about the medal, which is designed to recognize service members directly affecting combat operations who may not even be on the same continent as the action.

Critics compare it to being recognized for playing videogames.

Business Insider?s Geoffrey Ingersoll writes, ?There's been a near unanimous outcry from the military "underground" since the Pentagon announced new medals for drone pilots.? In particular, servicemembers find it unjustifiable that the medal would fall higher than a Bronze Star for Valor, which requires actual courage in the face of the enemy.?

Now a Photoshopped image (pictured above) of the Distinguished Warfare Medal posted to The Duffel Blog Facebook page on Thursday is going viral.?

A comment below the image says, ?If you haven't seen the new medal for Drone pilots, here it is.?

The image has received over 1,000 Likes and more than 2,000 shares at the time of this story.?

Viral: Russian meteor shot down by military?

#RussianMeteor is one of many related topics that quickly began trending on Twitter early this morning after a meteorite crashed into Russia?s Ural mountains.?

Also trending is #???????? (Russian for meteorite) and other topics like # Chelyabinsk, the region where the meteorite fell.

Not gonna lie, the video footage and photos that are being posted online are amazing, but that?s not the whole story.

If you check Twitter right now, what?s also being discussed widely is whether a Russian air defense unit shot down the meteorite.

According to the Russian news site RT, ?a missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.?

Nothing has been officially confirmed, but as you can guess, there are a lot of skeptics. ?

And ?Yes?, as rad as it sounds, you can count me among the skeptics.

I don?t know the first thing about astronomy or missile defense systems, so I can?t offer any expert opinion.? I?m not saying it?s impossible, but sad fact: all my knowledge on the subject comes from movies like Space Cowboys and Armageddon.

In lieu of commentary by myself, here are some of the comments being posted on Twitter.

Twitter lacks transparency on terrorist users

Twitter lacks transparency on terrorist users

I meant to point out this article earlier, but with a busy work week and other things going on?I?m only getting around to it now.

Al Jazeera English published a story that discusses Twitter?s lack of transparency on terrorism.? Something I?m sure many of you have noticed is a problem.? Twitter will act to quickly block one account for one act, but leave another similar account online.

The writer Sarah Kendzior points out that Twitter?s policy on free speech and its handling is unclear, noting that Al Shabaab was suspended, but other terrorist groups remain on the platform using the service.

Now if you ask me, defending tweets as free speech is one thing, but Al Shabaab made direct death threats and published photos of a dead French soldier.? If you read Twitter?s terms of service, even a five-year old can figure out the tweets were in clear violation of the rules.

If the rules aren?t enforced, then many people won?t follow the rules.

I?ve been complaining about Twitter?s stance on terrorism for years.? Although the microblogging company recently suspended the militant Islamist group al-Shabab?s account, a new account was launched on February 3 and already has over 2,000 followers.? This makes things even more confusing.

Kendzior is particularly concerned with Twitter?s lack of openness as to how it handles things and I would definitely agree.

Though I don?t agree with all points in the article, Kendzior does hit the nail on the head by saying, ?Censorship that goes undocumented goes unchallenged. At the moment, Twitter representatives refuse to talk, although they continue to release updates applauding their transparency.?

Twitter has attempted to offer more information with its transparency center located at transparency.twitter.com.? In late January Twitter said, ?It?s our continued hope that providing greater insight into this information helps in at least two ways: first, to raise public awareness about these invasive requests; second, to enable policy makers to make more informed decisions. All of our actions are in the interest of an open and safe Internet.?

Kendzior asked a Twitter representative via email to explain their policy, but the only response she got was that they "don't comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons".

You can read the full Al Jazeera English story here.

Someone lying about military service, now what?

Thursday, February 14, 2013, 03:10 AM - Reddit

I like to visit Reddit occasionally because it?s where I find some of the most interesting discussions.?

What do you do when your boss is lying about serving in the military?

?That's grounds for a challenge of a fight to the death. Call him out in your next meeting; if you win, you get his job?, writes chrome1453.

In a story posted to Reddit, a person claims to have proof that his boss is lying about his military service.?

Among the phony claims are that:

He was a gunny sergeant or a drill sergeant (depending who he told),
He served on the USS Enterprise,
He served in the Pacific Rim,
He lost his hearing when he was a drill sergeant (or gunny sergeant, again depending) when a private pulled the pin on a grenade.

Through a FOIA request filed through a friend, the person discovered that their boss had only served three weeks in the Marine Corps and was discharged as a Private First Class.?

While one commenter gave some sage advice and recommended he contact a site like stolenvalor.com, others offered more interesting ways to out him:

Students told to stop chanting 'USA' at game

Wednesday, February 13, 2013, 06:01 PM - News Stories Four California high-school students were told to stop chanting "USA! USA!" during a basketball game according to the National Review Online.

?We wanted to make sure [their actions weren't] racially motivated, and I told the kids I just want to be sensitive to the feelings of everybody,? Lipman said. ?If we?re doing it for patriotism, that?s fine. But if we?re doing it for something else that?s racially motivated, I?m not going to allow that.?

But the students deny any racial element to their chants. ?We?ve done it always,? one student said. ?It?s something we do. It?s the same group of friends. We?re all very patriotic.? The four students gained support from their peers: More than 100 students gathered by the school?s flagpole the following morning to protest in patriotic clothing.
There?s really not a whole lot to say, except ?Wow?.

Viral: Marine rifles w/out bolts at Inaugural

Monday, February 11, 2013, 07:00 AM - News Stories

Viral: Marine rifles w/out bolts at Inaugural

Photographs of Marines marching in the Presidential Inaugural Parade with no bolts in their rifles are starting to get a lot of attention online by bloggers, but not so much by the mainstream media.

The Examiner's David Codrea published a story on February 9 called ?Disabled Marine rifles at inauguration signal shift in administration policy (Photos)? that has people wondering.? Why no bolts in their rifles?

While I have no clue about the policy and therefore won?t comment on it, Codrea found video of the 2009 Inaugural Parade showing rifles with bolts.

Plenty of bloggers are chiming in, many with criticism.

The Gateway Pundit wrote, ?It?s not the first time the Obama Administration disarmed US Marines at an event. In March 2012, US Marines were told to leave their weapons outside the tent during Leon Panetta?s speech in Afghanistan.?

It?s an opportunity to share your experiences with your audiences through public speaking, articles, and social engagement via social media.?

The list of past bloggers to be involved in an embark represents some? of the big names in social media like Guy Kawasaki.

What?s involved in the Bloggers-Media Embarks?

Participants will be aboard ship for two or three days, touring the ship, meeting the leadership and crew, meals, lots of photo opportunities, plenty of adventure for blogs and podcasts, journalism articles, and memories to last a lifetime.

If you?d like to learn more, you can check out past embarks with the Navy here and here.

What?s the cost to you?

An embark of this type involves a fee of about $20 per day of embark paid to the Navy.

Those participants that the Navy selects must travel at their own expense roundtrip to and from Norfolk, Virginia, and unless very near the base already, e.g. one hour?s drive, lodge the night before near the base.? Show times for embarkation can be very early in the morning.? Departure typically can be the night of return, but participants do plan a contingency for traveling the day following return to shore.

When are the embarks?

There are plenty of embarks to select from on various Navy vessels.?

Here?s a look at the upcoming schedule.? Keep in mind, it?s three days.? Plan the day before, and the day after the three-day span as travel days to-from Norfolk, VA.

War at Home & Abroad: Digital History Archive

War at Home & Abroad: Digital History Archive

I?ve discussed a number of digital archive military projects on this website over the years including the granddaddy of them all, the Veterans History Project (by the Library of Congress).

Now, the Department of History at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), has launched their very own digital and oral history project called, War at Home and Abroad (WAHA) that aims to give a perspective and understanding of recent wars and to contribute to the yet-to-be-written history.

Launched in November 2012, the project is in its first phase, and oral histories from CSUSM campus veterans are being gathered in what?s called the Story Lab Project.? Eventually, the plan is to expand the project to veterans in the southern California region, not just campus veterans.

Here?s how the Story Lab works, which currently has 5 videos posted online:

?All WAHA veterans and active duty service personnel use the Digital History lab to self-narrate their stories, emphasizing what they feel is important for the public to know and remember. This technique allows for narrators to be the authors of their own oral histories and for a plurality of voices to be documented.? Each participant is furnished with the training, equipment, and space to film their memories.?

The project grew out of discussions among faculty in the Department of History in 2011.?

There is also a section on the website that shares print and digital documents, as well as photos.? Some of the items include Iraq Election Ballots and a card from the card deck given to US service members to arrest former members of the Saddam Hussein government.

This project has a lot of potential for gathering a ton of information.? According to the website, ?In 2012, San Diego County was home to the largest population in the nation?nearly 30,000?of returning veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.?

You can learn more about WAHA at http://www.csusmhistory.org/WAHA/

YouTube suspended in Egypt for one month

Saturday, February 9, 2013, 11:56 PM - News Stories

YouTube suspended in Egypt for one month

An Egyptian court has suspended the website ?YouTube for one month over the anti-Islamic video ?Innocence of Muslims?.?

According to Reuters:

?The country's administrative court ordered the ministries of communication and investment to block YouTube, owned by Google, inside Egypt because it had carried the film "Innocence of Muslims," said state news agency MENA.

The 13-minute video, billed as a film trailer and made in the United States, provoked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Egypt, Libya and dozens of other Muslim countries in September.?

The timing probably couldn?t be worse, with renewed clashes taking place between anti-government protesters and police.?

Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, have been used to spread information that would otherwise go unreported.

More here.

Research paper discusses Global Jihad Online

Thursday, February 7, 2013, 11:04 PM - Twitter

In a new research paper published in January by the New America Foundation, Aaron Zelin takes a look at the state of the global Jihad online.

The paper uses the word ?jihadis? instead of ?terrorists? throughout, but there?s little doubt as to the subject matter.

The interesting part of the research, which goes into detail about online forums, has to do with the use of Twitter by ?online jihadis?.?

Here are some of the highlights:

Jihadis have been highly innovative in their use of the Internet, but their use of Twitter and social media has lagged behind the general public, a fact that has drawn several explanations from specialists analyzing jihadi propaganda: (1) vulnerability; (2) ?if it ain?t broke [the forums], don?t fix it?; and (3) loss of authenticity.

Compared to al-Shabaab or Jabhat al-Nusra, the name al-Qaeda evokes a more visceral reaction, which might mean al-Qaeda would not use its formal name as an account since it likely would be taken down.

Jihadis, like other Twitter users, use hashtags. Hashtags are a popular way for Twitter users to follow tweets about specific topics and for tweeters to expand their audience. Al-Shabaab uses a custom hashtag (#JihadDispatches) to draw attention to events in Somalia.

It is only a matter of time before terrorists begin routinely using Twitter, Instagram, and other services in ongoing operations.

More jihadis continue to be attracted to Twitter, but that distribution mechanism is unlikely to replace the forums as the main environment for conversation and information distribution among jihadis

Twitter does, however, provide a means for jihadi organizations and individuals to provide information when breaking news occurs. Jihadis are likely to turn to Twitter for rapid response and to live-tweet extended violent events

Zelin runs down a list of Twitter accounts being used, including al-Shabab, which have been in the news more recently after Twitter suspended their account.? However, as I've written about, they?re back online under a different username.?

Zelin briefly touches on the fact that al-Shabab has been designated as a terrorist organization, but still remains online --- a?common question and concern for many.?

?Twitter has never publicly commented on this?, writes Zelin.

You can read the related story here and the research paper here.

Blog honors fallen Navy SEAL Brendan Looney

Blog honors fallen Navy SEAL Brendan Looney

I wanted to recognize a nice story that I read over at USNavySEALs.com that talks about a blog created by Kara Williams.

The blog honors fallen Navy SEAL Lt. Brendan Looney, who died in 2010 in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.? USNavySEALs.com cited another story from PEGASUSNEWS which first wrote about Kara and her vision for the blog.

According to the article, following the death of her husband, Amy Looney requested everyone perform 10 random acts of kindness by the end of 2012. The request inspired Kara Williams, who had never met Brendan or Amy, to start the website to get people to do an act of kindness in honor of Brendan and post it on the blog.

?It is our hope that Brendan?s family will be able to visit this blog and view all the good deeds that were motivated by who Brendan was and the way he lived his life,? Kara writes.

As of right now, over 100 people have shared the acts of kindness they performed.

If you'd like to learn more about Brendan Looney, The Travis Manion Foundation has several stories that talk about his life.

You can read more over at PEGASUSNEWS and visit the blog here: http://brendanlooney.wordpress.com/

Al-Shabab terrorist account back on Twitter

Tuesday, February 5, 2013, 05:29 PM - Twitter

Al-Shabab terrorist account back on Twitter

Nearly two weeks ago when the militant Islamist group al-Shabab was suspended on Twitter, it was already suspected that other accounts run by the terrorist group were springing up online.

Reuters reported earlier today that al-Shabab is back to tweeting, using a similar username (@HSMPress1) to their previous one (@HSMPress).

Among the online death threats and other TOS violations made by al-Shabab under @HSMPress, the group also published photographs of a dead French soldier in mid-January.

The new account, which was launched on February 3, has already gained nearly 2,000 followers.

It?s unknown whether the new account is the real thing or just a copycat, but hopefully Twitter keeps better on top of these things.

The company reacts fast to shut down scam accounts, but takes forever to cleanup these types of accounts, even though they are in blatant violation of its own rules.

This Ain't Hell in the news over SEAL impostor

Monday, February 4, 2013, 07:44 PM - Milbloggers in the News The military blog This Ain?t Hell got a mention in the news today, when The Times-Standard?s Luke Ramseth wrote about Ike Densmore, a Navy SEAL impostor.

Densmore committed suicide nearly two weeks ago, months after being outed for lying about his military credentials.

According to The Times-Standard, back in November 2012, ?Densmore falsely claimed he was a member of the United States Seal Team One, and that he earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, two presidential unit citations, and six Navy commendation medals.?

The news about Densmore was first broke by This Ain?t Hell, which to date, has helped to uncover nearly 100 people who have faked military credentials and awards.?

Jonn Lilyea, a blogger at This Ain?t Hell, told the Times-Standard that the website receives 7,000 hits a day, and that readers of the blog are often to thank for tips and information.

Lilyea published several stores about Densmore.?

In the latest post, published at the end of January, Lilyea discussed the death of Densmore, saying, ?While we grieve for the family Ike left behind, we?re still secure in our decision to bust him out. As I said before, he made the decision to be a phony and he made the decision to abandon his family so he could avoid the consequences of the other choices he had made.?

Last June, This Ain?t Hell was featured on MSNBC after outing "America's Got Talent" contestant Timothy Michael Poe, who had told the television audience and judges that he was injured in Afghanistan in 2009 by an RPG.

Read more about Ike Densmore at The Times-Standard.
