Imagine you are 15 years old. You were placed in DCF?s care when you were 9. You have 4 siblings, 2 older and 2 younger. Your father has been uninvolved in your life. You and your siblings were removed from your mother?s home due to being neglected and the mental health issues of your mom (your mom was sick mentally and couldn?t take care of you). You hoped your dad might decide he wanted to take care of you, but he never showed up for visits, though he chose to raise other children. You got to go home for a short while, when it appeared your mom had received mental health help, but your mom chose to live with a horrible man who hurt you in other disgusting ways. Your mother didn?t protect you. Therefore, you returned to foster care. You enjoy skateboarding, riding your bike and playing basketball like any other 15 year old. Due to your past neglect you never learned basic hygiene so you struggle keeping friends. You suffer with depression and anger due to all these things. Luckily a single foster mom has taken you in recently who you?ve beginning to create a close bond with. She is teaching you more about right and wrong, expressing your feelings, boundaries and consistency. You feel slightly hopeful, but still have so much sadness and anger in your heart.
This story describes a child currently in the Connecticut Foster Care System. Details were changed to protect the identity of the child.
