Police: Chesterfield coach confesses to sexual contact with player

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A youth soccer coach in Chesterfield is behind bars, facing charges of inappropriately touching, and texting, a young boy.

Investigators confirm 22-year-old Joseph Crespo confessed to the charges after he turned himself in Thursday.

Crespo coached at XL Sports World and with a junior varsity team at Clover Hill High School. Allegations surfaced after an 11-year-old boy's mother discovered what she considered alarming texts on her son's phone. Investigators say the boy then revealed a disturbing account, between himself and his coach.????

Investigators say Crespo met the boy he's accused of molesting at XL Sports World. Police say Crespo took the child to a soccer game, outside of the organization. During the ride home, Crespo's accused of inappropriately touching the boy over his clothing.

However, police say the boy kept silent. It wasn't until the child's mother says she discovered lewd texts from Crespo on her son's phone, that the child opened up.

Crespo now faces charges of aggravated sexual battery and taking indecent liberties with a child.

A manager of XL Sports World says that Crespo coached young players of all ages. He also says, as soon as they heard of the allegations, Crespo was fired. He adds that Crespo passed a background check, before becoming employed by the soccer club.

NBC12 spoke with two older teenagers who say they've played soccer alongside Crespo for several years. They say he's coached them, as well. The young men asked to remain anonymous.

"We all kind of thought? everyone on the team thought? he was kind of weird," said one of the teens.

"He was kind of out of place sometimes, but nobody really had a problem with him on our team," added the other young man.

Still, both say they were shocked at the news now circulating within the local soccer community.?

"We knew him pretty closely...and just never thought this would happen," continued one of the teens.

NBC12 knocked on Crespo's home door, but no one answered.

Crespo coached at least one other soccer club in the area. He's no longer employed there, or with Chesterfield schools. He is currently being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail.
